Le Fiere Del Rosario – San Dona Di Piave

As part of the WeGovNow project, this month the Mapping for Change team attended Le Fiere Del Rosario festival in San Donà Di Piave to support project partners Comune Di San Donà Di Piave in introducing the WeGovNow platform to a new audience.

The annual three-day festival is attended by 300,000 visitors and so presented the perfect opportunity to show local people a new way of participating in the shaping of their city. Using large paper maps at the exhibition stand and hands-on activities we focused on three key areassustainability in partnership with EnergyCare Interreg; urban regeneration in partnership with Urbact; and cycle routes. ECSA Conference 2018 – Citizen Science in Europe

The second European conference for citizen and participatory science, organised by the European Citizen Science Association – ECSA was held in Geneva this June. The three day event brought together some of the leading voices and minds in citizen science from across the globe to share ideas and learn from each other’s work. This international celebration of citizen science kicked off on Sunday 2nd with a Citizen Science Festival and Bioblitz for scientists and the public alike to get involved and explore the different projects that are going on throughout Europe and beyond.   Continue reading…

Influencing The London Plan for Gypsies and Travellers

Mapping for Change is working with London Gypsies and Travellers to gather various data to help influence the London Plan on an often over-looked community. The resulting maps build a more accurate picture of their presence, history and the inequalities and social exclusion they face. Biggest Air Quality monitoring action in Barcelona inspired by MfC methodology

Every day, more citizens are concerned about the air quality in their local environments and are willing to take action against it.

The education community of Barcelona (Spain) took this concern to initiate an ambitious, pioneering and inter-generational air quality monitoring initiative, xAire.  NO2 concentrations will be measured in over 800 locations around the city and more particularly, near schools. Continue reading…

Bike&Map: Contributing to Urban Design & Planning through Community Knowledge

The research, Analysing Active Mobility through Participatory Urbanism, deals with the practical application of emerging trends in participatory urbanism, as applied to the understanding of the urban environment issues of active mobility in Malta. Through citizen science, neogeography and volunteered geographic information (VGI), this research sought to analyse if and how community knowledge can be considered a viable option for understanding the urban environment issues for bicycle users in Malta. Mapping For Change Pilot Projects In Malta

The Mapping for Change engagement process has been piloted in Malta through a series of Participatory GIS initiatives held from December 2016 to November 2017. The participatory mapping projects were carried out as part of a doctoral thesis by Wendy Jo Mifsud and formed part of a research project led by StudjUrban within the wider Design 4D City research programme of the Valletta 2018 Foundation.

Air pollution is now fully acknowledged to be a significant public health problem, responsible for a growing range of health effects that are well documented.

Achieving the right public attitude, awareness and behaviour by the use of optimal air pollution monitoring, forecasting and reporting will go some way towards creating a healthier environment.
