Having identified this, we developed and delivered the first ever course on this topic, organised by the Department of Forest Engineering at the University of Córdoba, Spain.

Project partners in the UK, Europe and further afield are working with affected communities to co-design citizen science projects to map the odour issues and embrace the ‘power of many’ to reliably monitor odour. In tandem, we are working with odour emitting industries, regulators and researchers to explore possible actions to address odour.

Air pollution in Kampala is deteriorating at a concerning rate causing serious threat to the health of the population across the City. Children, older people and those with existing heart and lung conditions are among the most vulnerable and many of them are exposed to poor air quality during their daily commute to work and school. This is compounded by the fact that many schools are located near high traffic areas.

Air pollution is now fully acknowledged to be a significant public health problem, responsible for a growing range of health effects that are well documented.
Achieving the right public attitude, awareness and behaviour by the use of optimal air pollution monitoring, forecasting and reporting will go some way towards creating a healthier environment.
Love Lambeth Air Final Event

We have now come to an end of the six month monitoring period of our Love Lambeth Air project.
Mapping for Change, for Lambeth Council, has been providing diffusion tubes to Lambeth residents and businesses to measure nitrogen dioxide outside their home or office over the course of six months from October 2016.
Overall we had 30 participants monitoring 34 sites across the borough of Lambeth from Waterloo to West Norwood. The wide spread of monitoring was only made possible with thanks to the volunteer surveyors who every month changed the diffusion tube outside their home or office and returned the old tube for it to be processed in the lab for analysis. The results from the six months of monitoring will be made available on the Community Air Quality Map.

The video shows how the concern of local residents about air quality around their homes was developed into a citizen science project, thanks to Mapping for Change and the City of London. For twelve months, Mapping for Change worked with residents to measure local air quality levels in this centric estate and to produce measurable data. Continue reading…
Community Air Quality Monitoring – Funding Available

Mapping for Change can now enable up to four communities to undertake Air Quality Mapping projects by offering them a share of £1,000 funding. Proposals are invited from communities across London. The funds will cover the cost of purchasing diffusion tubes to measure nitrogen dioxide (NO2), laboratory analysis, and map creation. There is a strong likelihood of media coverage throughout the project.
Return of the Tubes: Communities Await Air Quality Results

In February, Mapping for Change equipped four community groups with all the materials needed to measure Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in their local areas. One month and four Citizen Science initiatives later, and the data from Clean Air in London’s air quality monitoring projects has been returned for analysis.

Mapping for Change have been working with residents in the Barbican Estate, City of London, to measure air quality levels since October 2013. To celebrate our achievements, we have produced a short documentary about the project processes, and our shocking findings.
