It has been a bustling winter so far for the We Care for Our Air project, entering the new year with a lot of momentum.
Three months of diffusion tube data have now been plotted onto Redbridge’s borough Air Quality Map, thanks to the 78 residents and organisations helping to monitor air pollution at places they care about, including Cllr Sunny Brar of Newbury Ward.

It’s been six months since the launch of We Care for Our Air Redbridge, a project aimed at understanding air quality in the borough. During this time, the community has come together to make commitments to support cleaner air.
We Care for our Air Redbridge has two strands to tackle the issue of air pollution head-on. Firstly, is our citizen-led data collection effort using NO2 diffusion tubes and hand-held particulate monitors. The second part of our mission is all about raising awareness and educating the community about the risks of air pollution. We focus on what actions each person can take to avoid pollution and improve the air in Redbridge.

In Nigeria, 70% of the population are involved in agriculture at a subsistence level. Most of their farming systems follow traditional methods, such as slash and burn, and are increasing their chemical dependence. These elements are key drivers of rising deforestation, land degradation and ecosystem loss, among others. In addition, the impact of climate variability has altered Nigeria’s rainfall and temperature regimes over the past decade.

On the 26th of June, London Gypsies and Travellers held an insightful exhibition, ‘Mapping the Histories of London’s travellers’, which shed light on the unique contributions made by Romany Gypsies, Irish Travellers and Travelling Showpeople to London’s social, economic and cultural life since the 19th century. Centred around the geography of nomadic life in London over time, the exhibition uncovered the ways in which the histories of Gypsies and Travellers are directly tied to the evolution of London.

As part of the WeGovNow project, this month the Mapping for Change team attended Le Fiere Del Rosario festival in San Donà Di Piave to support project partners Comune Di San Donà Di Piave in introducing the WeGovNow platform to a new audience.
The annual three-day festival is attended by 300,000 visitors and so presented the perfect opportunity to show local people a new way of participating in the shaping of their city. Using large paper maps at the exhibition stand and hands-on activities we focused on three key areas – sustainability in partnership with EnergyCare Interreg; urban regeneration in partnership with Urbact; and cycle routes. Love Lambeth Air Final Event

We have now come to an end of the six month monitoring period of our Love Lambeth Air project.
Mapping for Change, for Lambeth Council, has been providing diffusion tubes to Lambeth residents and businesses to measure nitrogen dioxide outside their home or office over the course of six months from October 2016.
Overall we had 30 participants monitoring 34 sites across the borough of Lambeth from Waterloo to West Norwood. The wide spread of monitoring was only made possible with thanks to the volunteer surveyors who every month changed the diffusion tube outside their home or office and returned the old tube for it to be processed in the lab for analysis. The results from the six months of monitoring will be made available on the Community Air Quality Map.
Mapping Accessibility in Thessaloniki for World Tourism Day

On a lovely autumn day in the sunny city of Thessaloniki Mapping for Change joined forces with other Cap4Access team members to explore accessibility across the city. The mapping party formed part of a series of similar MapMyDay events being run across the globe, which started on September 27 , World Tourism Day. This year the United Nations (UN) World Tourism Organization chose the theme “Tourism for All. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared: “On this World Tourism Day, let us recognize that all people can and should be able to participate in tourism and enjoy unforgettable travel experiences.”
Communities Embark on Air Quality Mapping

After receiving £1000 funding in November, Mapping for Change called for up to four communities to conduct air quality monitoring work in their local area. Each community would undertake a month-long monitoring process during February 2015, placing plastic diffusion tubes in strategic areas to measure nitrogen dioxide levels.
Clean Up London Air

Four communities across London took part in a month long citizen science project supported by Mapping for Change. The aim of ‘Clean Up London Air’ was to monitor and map Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) pollution levels in both quiet residential areas selected by the local residents and adjacent roads with heavy passing traffic during the month of July. The four areas involved in the project, Latimer Road, Camden, Islington and Crystal Palace can be viewed on the Air Quality Community Map.
